Mr. Isaacs, a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, began his employee benefits career in New York with the Martin E. Segal Company. He remained with the Segal Company for 12 years in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He worked in all areas of Multiemployer (Taft-Hartley) health and welfare and pension trust fund operations.
Following his tenure with the Segal Company, Mr. Isaacs directed the human resource, employee benefits, retiree system and commercial risk functions for a publicly traded corporation. He developed and led a corporation-wide group insurance plan for 5,000 employees at 16 plant locations i n the United States and Canada. His activities included consolidating five retirement systems into one master trust, participating in bargaining unit negotiations and working with the acquisition team on pre- and post-acquisition employee benefit issues.
Recruited by the William Mercer Company to join their Los Angeles Consulting practice, he evaluated, developed and marketed group life, disability, travel accident and a full range of health plans for a variety of Mercer’s major corporate and trust fund clients. Mr. Isaacs gained additional expertise in self-funding options and consulted with his clients on the risk and value of these approaches in specific cases.
Mr. Isaacs then opened the Los Angeles Office of Steven E. Schanes, Ltd., where he consulted with senior management on a variety of employee benefit issues. His clients included significant national companies as well as a large California Multiple Employer Welfare Association (MEWA). The Schanes practice offered special expertise concerning state and federal government employee benefit compliance issues.
Mr. Isaacs established his own consulting firm before merging with Garner Consulting in 1997. Carl M. Isaacs & Associates offered advice on all aspects of employee benefit programs with an emphasis on group insurance plan design, claims analysis and projections, selecting claims administrators, insurance organizations and identification of cost reduction opportunities consistent with his client’s goals.
Mr. Isaacs continues in the same capacity as a Principal, using his expertise to serve Garner Consulting and its clients.
